I understand about being polite and not causing unnecessary friction between two or more people. I usually use email to contact by girlfriends and other friends that don't live near me. I hate the phone so it works out pretty well for me.
I also read and article on L&L about use of the internet as a research tool for students. The internet is ripe with contradiction and misinformation. It is terribly important for students to get their information from credible sources and sights. It is crucial that students utilize sites that have references and are generated by peoples whose credentials are able to reference. If someone says they are a college professor, look up their college sight and verify that they are staff members.
One thing I did not know was that search engines search databases rather than the entire web (page 15). I still do now know what the difference is.
With any luck, my emails will continue to reflect proper netiquitte and my students research will be from credible sights that are from verifiable sources. Thank you.
